Carpet Cleaning History

Before World War II, all rugs being portable were best cleaned in a specialized warehouse. After beating and vacuuming, the rugs were spread on a slab floor, hosed down with detergent and hot water, and scrubbed by rotary brush. After rinsing, they were dried. Really excellent result can be achieved.

After WWII, the home builders has a dramatic change in house development. Hardwood flooring was replaced with concrete slabs or plywood. Wall carpeting was popular because it’s warm , decorative with noise reduction bonus. Developers and home owners liked it also because its more affordable.

However wall carpet was not portable. Cleaner now had to come to the home with solution tank and smaller portable rotary scrubber. Fast-drying shampoo that used less moisture was invented.

Then the dry foam method was introduced. It is a foam brushed onto the carpet and vacuumed back up. However, this method leave a lots of chemical residue in the carpet, and there is no deep cleaning. The experienced carpet cleaners did not accept this method, so following an earlier lead, they sold them to new cleaners.

In the early 1960's Steam cleaning came to the market.. Technically, this method should be described as hot water extraction. A cleaning plant operator In Southern California in wanted to make steam cleaner portable. Just like earlier equipment had been made portable.

Later, each of these operators claimed patent rights, several faults delayed acceptance by the established carpet cleaners. The first was the expensive price. Established carpet cleaner did not accept anything new or different and struck back. Rather than promoting carpet cleaning, both sides trying to bring down each other.

Most of the early machines sprayed too much water and extract too little water. By 1970s the new steam method was described as a superior way to clean carpets. Major manufacturers and chemical companies were entered into the industry. Training seminars were also organised for newcomer with the field. Steam cleaning has finally become the main stream.
