 Have you ever wondered why you seem to get an extra spring in your step when you walk into certain rooms?  While it might be a sudden burst of energy, it also might be the underlay of your carpet.  Underlay is a thin layer of cushion that is put underneath your carpet to make it more comfortable.  It also adds insulation against heat, moisture and sound.  It can even add years to your carpet’s life by buffering it from excessive wear.  Underlay can also help or hinder carpet cleaning, depending on the kind you have.

When you are laying carpet, you might be tempted to get the thickest underlay that you can, while others might try to get the cheapest.  Onehunga carpet cleaning advises against this.  When you buy the carpet, you should read the manufacture’s recommendations closely so that you can find a padding that matches the weight and size that is appropriate.  You also want to match the thickness of the underlay with the thickness of the carpet and make sure to use a thinner, firmer underlay for rooms that get more traffic.

You also have to choose the material for your underlay, which can affect the cost, degree of insulation and ease of carpet cleaning.  Most underlay is made from some type of rubber, foam or other synthetic materials like bonded polyurethane chips for the more eco-friendly.  Rubber is used most often, especially crumb rubber since it is recycled.  Flat rubber insulation is usually the most expensive, but it is also the best.  It is very durable and is also good for carpet cleaning, since stains that soak through the carpet do not adhere well to the material and make it much easier to clean.

If you choose a cheap and thin underlay, you will be able to tell the difference very quickly.  Just by walking on it, you will feel how much harder and uncomfortable the floor is.  Also, with less insulation your air conditioning will have to work harder in more extreme heat.  Furthermore, if you are prone to spilling food and drink, these stains can sink down below the carpet into the underlay and cause smells that are difficult to get out even with a deep carpet cleaning technique.  If it is bad enough, you might have to take up the carpet and put down new padding that makes it much more expensive than getting something like flat rubber.
